Democratising Ethical Regulation and Practice in Educational Research

This paper sets the context for questions covered in Education Sciences Special Issue: Regulation and Ethical Practice Educational Research: What are appropriate ethical appraisal approval practices particular contexts? How can ethics committees effectively support educational researchers research? To do so, argues a democratising of regulation practice research, which includes decolonization agenda, to break away from enduring power imbalances knowledge production. A key focus is on research through (whether institutional, regional and/or national) how this affects practice. While intended help protect benefit potential participants, themselves have an important part play recognizing removing barriers inclusivity, as well erecting them, maximise benefits research. overturn dominance global North knowledge, post-colonial regulation, broader conversations researcher values experiences different parts world needed. explores committees’ expectations could shape decision-making. It presents examples approaches would empowerment participation, not only gatekeepers participants but also community, whether experienced researcher, committee member or neophyte researcher. Evidence paves way forward drawn range contexts acknowledge wide-ranging impact colonialism, neo-liberalism neo-imperialism.
